Chronological memoranda of personal events during his service in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1863.

Dennett's narrative was compiled after the war, possibly from diary notes. It begins with his enlistment in Company B., U.S. Engineers, October 20, 1861 and continues to April 29, 1863. Subjects treated very briefly include the journey to Washington; arrest for not having a pass; voyage to Fortress Monroe; the Peninsula campaign; Professor Lowe and his balloon; building pontoons, bomb-proofs, and field fortifications; illnesses including "malarial typhoid fever" treated with quinine and neuralgia; life on a hospital ship; Portsmouth Grove hospital; and invalided discharge. With the narrative is a separate sheet containing notes for April 28 and 29, 1863, taken from diaries and/or letters of S.C. Hopkins and G. Shackford giving more details on pontoon bridges and the crossing of the Rappahannock at the start of the Chancellorsville campaign.
